Kingsland Railway Station is on the Western Line of the Auckland railway network. It is near Eden Park, the major rugby stadium in Auckland. The station has a side platform layout and is reached from both New North Road & Sandringham Road.
During rugby games this station, 400m from Eden Park, is very busy, with thousands of supporters using it.
History
- 1880: It opened as one of the original stations on the North Auckland Line.[1]
- 1993: The platform was upgraded to meet the requirements of new ex-Perth trains.[1]
- 2004: The station was rebuilt as part of the Western Line double-tracking project, for $4 million.[2]
- 2009-2010: The platforms were lengthened to 115 m for six-car trains, and several new stairs and an underpass from Sandringham Road to the northern side platform constructed, at a cost of $6 million. Signalling was also upgraded to allow trains to head out from both tracks into the same direction. These upgrades will serve the needs of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, where it is expected that 15,000 rugby fans per game will use the station in just 70 minutes. Groups of 1,000 fans are to board trains at a time, with a train departing every 5 minutes.[2][3][4]
